Rose Meaning Is Known By Almost Everyone

Rose meaning is known by almost everyone on some level - otherwise it wouldn't be the most popularly sent flower on Valentine's Day! This page honors the upcoming event, and explores the richness of rose meanings and its lush symbolism.

In alchemical texts and art, a rose with seven petals is a symbol of inclusion, universal understanding and order. Presumably, because in Pythagorean numerology the number seven is iconic of the perfection in the specific unfolding the universe as well as human understanding.

We see a partnership between the rose and numbers in Freemasonry too where three roses are symbolic of a guiding principle. Each of the three roses seen in Freemason symbology indicates abiding Love, Life, and Light.

In mythology, rose meaning is associated with Aphrodite goddess of love who was often depicted adorned with roses around her head, feet and or neck. In lore, we track down this association when we discover that a rose bush grew within the pool of blood spilled from Aphrodite's slain lover. We can interpret the symbolism here several ways. The most common interpretation is that the rose symbolizes an immortal love or a union that will never fade - even through time or death.

Similarly in Christian lore, a rose bush was said to have grown at the site of Christ's death. His blood serving is often associated with a red rose, combined with its thorns is thus symbolized the ultimate sacrifice.

In addition to being a symbol of love, the rose is also symbolic carrier of secrets or tacit understanding. The term "sub rosa" means under the rose and comes from the practice of Romans hanging roses above meeting tables. Here it was understood that anything said at this table, beneath the hanging roses, was forbidden to be repeated elsewhere.

Seeking symbolic meaning of the rose from an esoteric perspective, we can look at the Tarot, in which the rose is considered a symbol of balance. Here the beauty of the rose expresses promise, new beginnings, hope. This beauty is contrasted with its thorns which represents defense, physicality, loss, thoughtlessness. The rose is seen in the major arcana as: Magician, Strength, Death and Fool cards. All of these cards hold strong meanings of balance and equilibrium.

How To Grow Good Roses

Fall is the best time for setting out roses, but you can plant in spring. When they arrive from the nursery, plant at once. If they have dried en route, soak the roots and put the tops in a bucket of water before planting. Trim back any roots that are weak, long or broken at this time. Dig a hole that is wide enough to allow the roots to spread without crowding.

The rose is properly placed when the bud (the point where the top joins the roots) is just under the ground surface. Space hybrid teas about 18 inches apart in any direction. Prune the branches 6 to 10 inches from the soil.

To grow good roses it is necessary to cultivate, to prune and to spray. If you have a well-cultivated bed you need not worry about watering. But if you start to water in hot weather, you must keep it up, soaking the roots thoroughly about once a week.
Spraying every 10 days guards against the diseases and insects that attack roses.

Nicotine sulphate wipes out the green lice; arsenate of lead is used against chewing insects; or sulphur and arsenate of lead may be used in a dust, as may DDT dust.
Winterize your roses by mounding sod around them after the first frost, or mulch with straw and evergreens. In cold parts of the country, remove the supports from the climbing roses and place the canes on the ground, peg them, and cover with soil mounds.

In spring, cut back your roses to within 6 inches of the ground. Ruthlessly lop off all but three or four canes on hybrid teas. This pruning will give you strong plants. When your plants grow out from spring pruning, you will have to disbud, cutting off all the buds except the top ones on the cane. This is the way to grow large blossoms.

The Smell Of the Hyacinth

Hyacinth is any plant of genus Hyacinthus, which are bulbous herbs formerly placed in the lily family Liliaceae but now regarded as the type genus of the separate family Hyacinthaceae. Hyacinths are native to the eastern Mediterranean region east to Iran and Turkmenistan. They are named after the Hyacinth from Greek mythology. Hyacinths are sometimes associated with rebirth. The Hyacinth flower is used in the Haftseen table setting for the Persian New Year celebration Norouz held during the Spring Equinox. The prophet Mohammad is reported to have said “If I had but two loaves of bread, I would sell one and buy hyacinths, for they would feed my soul.”
Only three species are currently recognised within the genus Hyacinthus. They are:
Hyacinthus litwinowii
Hyacinthus orientalis - Common, Dutch or Garden Hyacinth
Hyacinthus transcaspicus
Some authorities place H. litwonowii and H. transcaspicus in the related genus Hyacinthella, leaving Hyacinthus as monotypic.
The Dutch, or Common Hyacinth of house and garden culture (H. orientalis, native to southwest Asia) was so popular in the 18th century that over 2,000 cultivars were cultivated in the Netherlands, its chief commercial producer. This hyacinth has a single dense spike of fragrant flowers in shades of red, blue, white, or yellow. A form of the common hyacinth is the less hardy and smaller blue- or white-petalled Roman hyacinth of florists. These flowers should have indirect sunlight and are to be moderately watered.
The related grape hyacinths (Muscari), sometimes called baby's-breath, are very low, mostly blue-flowered plants similar in appearance to hyacinths and are also commonly cultivated.
Several types of brodiea, deathcamas, squill, and other plants that were formerly classified in the lily family and have flower clusters borne along the stalk also have common names with hyacinth in them.

Know About The Tulip's Habits And Plant It

You may love roses best, but there are a lot of people who love tulips best, they are not only beautiful and colorful, but also easy to plant bu ourselves. Tulips are a favorite of cutting gardens, especially in the north, blooms of tulips are one of season's first flowers in a garden and for a vase inside.

Tulip is the most popular flower in Netherlands, and there are also a lot of kinds of flowers and species, and they can live longer and bloom earlier compared with the other hybrid types, so these types of tulips are good choices for naturalizing in open areas.

Tulip is also a good choice to make part of a container garden, especially in pots with wide planting surfaces. Triumphs, doubles and Darwins are good for this purpose. The exotic looking parrot tulip Estella Rijnveld has red and white splashes on the petals and is a late flowering tulip.

Tulips are developed especially for forcing during winter months in time to bloom very early spring indoors. It is possible to layer different types of spring blooming bulbs in the same pot. Fragrant tulips should be planted where the scent can be appreciated. Gardens near a patio or along a walkway are good choices.

Gardeners can choose hybrids with scented blooms such as the single early Apricot Beauty or look for fragrant triumphs and parrot tulip varieties. Parrot tulips have irregular petals that look curled, twisted, or cut. Some parrot tulips have variegated leaves, adding another look to scented gardens.

Finishing Your Relationship Amicably Without Harm

Women, we are easily hurt by those relationships we have that does not work out well. We tend to work on things just to forget about it or sometimes we want to end our lives which will eventually not the solution. How do we end up a relationship in which we will not be hurt so much?

Breaking up and finishing your relationship amicably, or dealing with a divorce in a mutually respectful way. It all becomes more manageable and less messy.

end a relationship
Can anyone be good enough to forget the hurt that has gone through the relationship? This question that must be analyzed between a man and a woman who have ended the relationship they had with one another. How graceful we are to accept the fact that we are not so perfect enough to plan every step in our relationship with a man.

Being dumped is one of the most devastating things that happens in life. Therefore, one should always weigh the reasons for walking out, making sure of this decision before making it final. Once you are sure, though, it's important to remember that your soon-to-be ex was once your love. Although breaking thisrelationship off is certain to be painful, especially for the person being dumped, it's important to be respectful of the other person's feelings, and try hard to do as little damage as possible.

Talk Early and Often – The time of the actual breakup should not be the first time your partner is made aware that you have issues with how things are going. A good friend of mine is fond of saying that relationships are much like driving a car. As long as small steering corrections are made as one rolls down the road, a large jerk of the wheel should never be required.

Always End It in Person – There is nothing more cowardly and pathetic than ending a relationship over the phone, or even worse, through an e-mail or text message. Yet, more and more men are finding this an acceptable medium for cutting ties.

If you can’t handle the prospect of ending a relationship in person, you shouldn’t start one in the first place.

Be Clear – The breakup is not the time to be vague or mysterious. Your lady friend will most likely want some specific reasons why you want to end the relationship, so be ready to provide them. A non-answer like, “I’m just not feeling it anymore,” only shows that you are either a coward or a narcissist, but definitely not a man.You don’t necessarily need a record of wrongs, but having a mental list of things that led you down this road will help the discussion move in the right direction.

Be Considerate – While clarity is necessary, being cruel is not. Breaking up is hard enough without being demeaned or berated in the process. The breakup is not the time to be telling her that the dress she wore on your anniversary actually did make her look fat or that you’ve met dogs with better breath.

No Hanging Chads – No one likes uncertainty. Remember the hanging chad controversy during the 2000 presidential election? The most frustrating aspect of the situation was not being able to tell who citizens had actually voted for. In the same way, men often leave the relationship in an unsettled manner with words that indicate a possibility of picking things up again in the future. Is it over? Is it not? No one knows.

Find yourself a quiet space, perhaps in the bath or some other place you naturally relax. Close your eyes. Focus on your breathing slowing down. And when you are nice and relaxed…just begin to imagine watching yourself from the outside looking composed and poised as you calmly tell your partner that it’s over. The more strongly you do this, the more you’ll prime your mind and emotions to feel the right way about doing the right thing. Or let me help you by clicking on the free audio link below.

What Flowers Can We Send To Fathers

Flower Send To Father
And contrary to a popular misconeption, men loves flowers - especially architectural and bold flowers. Tropical flowers are very masculine and also long lasting. We have some varieties that you simply could not find anywhere else. Tall, sturdy, masculine and lasting - just like dad.

Celebrated on the third Sunday of June in most of the countries, Father’s Day lets you express your love and respect for your dad in the most beautiful manner. The idea of celebrating Father’s Day was given by Ms Sonora Dodd, a loving daughter from Spokane. Her father Mr. Henry Jackson Smart raised her and her siblings, single handedly after the death of their mother. She held her father in great esteem and while hearing a church sermon about the recognized Mother’s Day, Sonora strongly felt that Fatherhood needed recognition as well. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19th 1910 in Spokane. Washington and idea of Father’s Day soon became popular and was embraced across USA. In the year 1972, President Richard Nixon established the national observance of Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June.

Over the years, the concept of Father’s Day celebrations has spread across the world and today millions of children express gratitude for their father as they celebrate this day.

To convey your love for the most important man in your life – your Father- you can send a gift, no matter which part of the world he lives in. Through an online flower store, you can send a beautiful bouquet internationally.

To convey your love for the most important man in your life – your Father- you can send a gift, no matter which part of the world he lives in. Through an online flower store, you can send a beautiful bouquet internationally.

Just as carnations are regarded as traditional flowers for Mother’s Day, the most adorable and king of flowers- Rose was chosen as the symbolic flower for Father’s Day. It is believed that Ms Sonora Dodd gave the idea of selecting Rose as the traditional flower for Father’s Day. In some parts of the world, Lilly is also regarded as a traditional flower for Father’s Day.

Choose roses or lilies, you can send a beautiful bouquet internationally to give a pleasant surprise to your father on this Father’s Day. There exists a strong custom to express love and gratitude for father with a bunch of flowers.

You can choose from a fascinating range of bouquets at Fleurop. A Premium Roses Bouquet, the ‘Mayla’, a ‘Cheerful Spring’ bouquet or any other set of flowers as per your choice. We deliver flowers across all major countries in North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Pacific region.

Often, when someone thinks of flower bouquets, they think of lilies, daisies or other bright and florally bouquets. But at ProFlowers, we know there are so many masculine options, which come in handy when you are looking to send flowers to dad! And let us reassure you that flowers and plants make great gifts for men! Sending dad an arrangement of orchids, a bunch of irises or a mixed bouquet are always acceptable Father’s Day gifts. They are gifts that dad loves because he knows they came from you as a meaning of love and appreciation. Although you can send dad any kind of flowers you want, we want to recommend a few of our favorite flowers for men.

Want something that gives off the same lovely feeling as flowers, but will last longer? Flowering plants will do just that, which is why ProFlowers considers them another great Father’s Day gift idea. They are also the perfect gift if dad has a green thumb and would absolutely enjoy a gift he can tend and care to. Simply decide if dad would prefer roses, fragrant gardenia, and even azalea bonsai. And with so many blooming plants to choose from, you can further customize the gift by choosing a color that resembles his favorite sports team, your birthstone color (since it is a Father’s Day flower gift), or simply his favorite color!

Another great Father’s Day idea is giving dad a plant “bouquet”. This kind of bouquet is all plant, no flowers! For example, a lucky twist bamboo resembles the shape of a regular blossoming bouquet, only without flowers. Or a ponytail palm can resemble the shape and feel of an orchid, but is really a miniature palm tree bonsai. Dad will love the idea of receiving a little green plant for Father’s Day that can liven up his work office, home office or even kitchen table.

Flowers stores online feature easy ordering and quick delivery. The hardest part for you will be choosing which flower or plant to send to dad. Just remember to take your time in choosing the best gift for him. The hardest part for dad will be deciding where he should put it!

DIY Flower Crown Of Your Own Style

DIY Flower Crown
All the photos above are from previous features on Green Wedding Shoes. The glam  gold crown is from this featurewith headpiece by Jannie Baltzar, the dried flower crown is from this real wedding, the boho bridesmaids are from this wedding, the fern + flower crown is from this woodsy shoot and the bottom two photos are from this inspirational shoot.

Ben Sasso recently sent over the photos below. Love the look of real flowers! These were done by The Conservatorie. If you are interested in real flowers for your wedding day, check with your florists to see if they can create something beautiful for you! So gorgeous!

So, where can you get this look? Well, if you are looking for a crown of real flowers, you can either DIY it yourself or I recommend having your florist create it since it can be a bit tricky depending which type of flowers you are using. And you want to make sure your flowers are alive and pretty when you walk down the aisle!

Another option is to buy (or DIY since we’ll be sharing how later today!) your flower crown. There are so many talented designers out there with their own spin on the trend using either fabric, silk or dried flowers. Some of my faves I recommend checking out for this trend include (starting at the top right): Twigs & Honey, Whichgoose, Mignonne Handmade, Lo Boheme, Ruche

To begin, you’ll create the base of the flower crown out of two pieces of floral wire. Mold and gently bend each piece into a half circle. Face the half circles opposite of each other to create a circle and lay it over the top of your head to check the fit. It should be quite snug as the addition of flowers will eventually weigh the crown down. Wrap both overlapping sections tightly with floral tape.

Before adding the flowers to the base, you’ll create several small clusters of flowers. This avoids having to attach each flower individually and overloading the crown with tape. Pick a flower and continue adding 4-5 flowers, each one nestled right below the other. Tightly wrap the base with floral tape. Trim the tips if necessary.

Flower Crown
It’s officially Midsummer and honestly, what’s not to love about time-honored celebrations, especially when it involves wearing wildflowers around your head, drinking vodka and dancing around a maypole? Naturally with our love of cultures, customs, and DIYs, we’ve partnered up with our friends atKanon Organic Vodka on a sweet flower crown DIY for their annual Swedish Midsummer festivities and for the ultimate contest. Participating is as simple as liking Kanon’s Facebook page, picking your favorite Midsummer tradition, sharing it with your friends, and winning a chic Phillip Lim bag, gorgeous Pamela Love jewelry or much much more! Click here for more details. Good luck & SKOL!

Once you’ve made 10-15 clusters, start adding them to the base. Position a cluster of flowers against the outside of the wire base and wrap tightly with floral tape. Overlap the second cluster over the first and wrap tightly with tape. Continue layering clusters in the same direction until the entire base is filled. Spray the crown with water or keep it in a cool place until you’re ready to wear it!

STEP 1: Get your supplies! I bought all of my supplies at Michael’s, but any craft store should suffice. What you will need is a handful of selected silk flowers, wire cutters/pliers, heavy rustic floral wire for the base, thin floral wire (green) to attach the flowers, and floral tape or ribbon (both optional).

STEP 2: Take your rustic floral wire and shape it into a circle that fits comfortably on your head. I would suggest making it a little loose because the flowers end up making it fit a bit snugger at the end.

STEP 3: Begin arranging your flowers on the base and decide the general placement of the flowers prior to attaching them. Once decided, start from the back and begin working forward. Take your thin green floral wire and secure each flower into place by wrapping tightly around the base several times (or until you feel like it is secure).

STEP 4: For the larger flowers, there was not enough of a stem for me to securely attach it to the crown, so I improvised, and first went underneath the bottom of the rose and tightly wrapped the wire underneath the green base of the flower between the petals and the stem. Make sure to cut the wire long enough to be able to first wrap around the bottom of the flower as well as still wrap around the crown afterward.

STEP 5: Continue the process moving around to the front of the crown and to the opposite side. There is really no “right” way to arrange your flowers. Just play with it until you feel like they lie the way you like.

STEP 6: You can choose to wrap your flowers around the entire circle of the crown, or, like I did, only go 3/4 around the base. If you decide to only go 3/4, you can finish it off by wrapping the back with floral wire or ribbon. I decided to leave mine as it was because I liked the natural look of it. Voila! You have yourself a flower crown!

Let The Attractive Hyacinth Furnitures Your Home Or Garden

Hyacinth
When warm breezes bear their fragrances, Hyacinth should be among them. Also known as Galtonia candicans, Hyacinth brings the beauty of hyacinths to your late summer garden. It's a member of the Hyacinthaceae family, perennial plants that grow from flower bulbs. The blooms are much taller than Dutch Hyacinths. Flowers are produced in late summer to early fall on stems up 48" to long. After flowering, the leaves yellow and die.

Flowers are associated with so many emotions for human beings. Right from falling in love to greetings, congratulations, condolences and just having guests home for dinner they can brighten us up. Getting the right kind of flower seed makes a gardener happy. There are several flower seeds for sale for the whole year. Flowers primarily attract bees, insects and butterflies. Do you want pretty butterflies fluttering on the flowers in your garden? Chose flower seeds that will attract these beautiful creatures. Get a wild flower seed mixture. And see a vibrant colorful bloom greeting the other elements of the nature kingdom.

Though hyacinth furmiture is created from comfortable fiber you can be confident of the same quality, design and built when compared to wicker, hard wood and metal. There are manufacturers that are constantly setting up exceptional collections to accommodate to individuals who possess superb preferences whenever it comes down to home furnishings. A water hyacinth frames, arms and base will certainly create a radiant outdoor tropical feel. Why don't you present a tropical style collection displaying your furnishings pieces hand woven in water hyacinth, sea grass or rattan?

Hyacinth

If you have admired the colorful little rounds of pretty flowers in your neighbor's garden, then why not buy Hyacinths Flower Bulbs? They can become the pride of any garden. There are so many to choose from. When you buy Hyacinth bulbs in bulk chose different colors can be combined. They come in blue, pink, lavender, and white shades. Ask for Peter Stuyvesent, gypsy queen or white Carnegie. Try to have another bouquet variety comprising of fondant, armeniacum, Jan Bos, and latifolium.

Before you actually plant the seeds, get all the information that will be helpful. If someone already has them in the garden, ask them how they can be tended. Will the winter sun be good for them? Will they need more water? What happens on days when the sun does not appear? These are the likely questions that should be raised while planting Hyacinth bulbs. When one buys seeds it gives a better way of nurturing the bloom from scratch and this is something most garners enjoy. When the seed packets are bought they need to germinate indoors first. The seedlings need to be tended from the every beginning. They should sprout well so that they are put in the flower beds at the right time. Some seeds need to be put in a larger container once they start to germinate. Watch then grow each day. If the planting instructions are followed then the flower bloom will be there for all to see.

Botanists and gardeners carry plants with them in their travels, and experts suspect that this is how the water hyacinth came to West Africa in the 1980s. Its flowers are beautiful; it was probably brought over as an ornamental for garden ponds (United Nations News, 2000). The consensus is that Water Hyacinth entered Lake Victoria from Rwanda via the river Kagera (Ambrose 1997). The exact time and place of introduction has been debated, but the plant is native to South America, and therefore reached Lake Victoria due to human activity. It has spread prolifically, due to lack of natural enemies, an abundance of space, agreeable temperature conditions, and abundant nutrients (Opande et al., 2004). It increased rapidly between 1992-1998, was greatly reduced by 2001, and has since resurged to a lesser degree. Management techniques include (hyacinth-eating) insect controls and manual beach cleanup efforts (Kateregga/Sterner 2007). A water hyacinth infestation is seldom totally eradicated. Instead, it is a situation that must be continually managed (LVEMP, 2004 ) (United Nations News, 2000)).

No matter whether you are searching to go for pieces of furniture for your interior or patio styling give some thought to the new and modern home furniture pieces produced from comfortable fibres and comfortable flowing lines and edges or frames to decorate the house or office. Not only it will certainly provide you good interiors you may also spend less when the water hyacinth furniture are especially inexpensive. Go and have the help you require with your own home design and get a complimentary interior decorating consultation with a professional green home furniture designers.

The plants require very little maintenance. Plant them and forget about them. They are wonderful for bulb gardens, perennial gardens, container gardens. Summer Hyacinths are superb as cut flowers. They last a long time. The white blooms are wonderful when contrasted with plants having darker colored foliage and flowers. After blooming, be sure to let the leaves yellow and die before cutting them. Leaving them alone will allow the bulbs to build up food reserves for a glorious show the next year. Believe me, a generous planting of Summer Hyacinths will delight the eye and nose.

Decorating Your Office With Flowers And Indoor Plants

There are some good advantages when it comes to caring for indoor flowers. You are the one that is in control. You control the lighting which can come from outside natural day light or you can install fluorescent growing lights. You are also in control of the watering, which is the second most important thing the flowers need. If you are now sure when exactly to water your flowers, there are water moisture testers which stick into the soil next to the plant. You can also use your finger to test the soil to see if it is still moist. If it is a little damp you should wait for another day or two before watering it.

Some people put flowers in a vase with some dirt around it and water the flower until all the soil has turned damp and they could see the it from the outside of the vase. This technique is a bad idea; the water puddles up in the bottom of the vase, however, after a time it becomes a breeding ground for some bad bacteria which is harmful to the flowers roots. These people will soon begin to see the tops of their flowers begin to wilt, then the stems will slowly turn a light brown color and this will continue until part of the flower has to be pruned. It doesn't help to keep adding water it doesn't help much.

Utilizing indoor plants and flowers is a great way to improve the quality of your home or office. Most people prefer real plants, as opposed to silk flowers and realistic small trees. The reason for that is likely because plans do naturally release clean, fresh oxygen into the air and really do provide that fresh air feeling when you do it right.

There's nothing nicer than being surrounded by fresh green plants and colorful flowers to make every day just a little more enjoyable. If everybody could have an outdoor living room or office, with perfect weather 24 hours a day, 365 days a year I'm sure that would be the current craze! Unfortunately such an environment isn't possible, but you can get close by decorating your home or office with indoor plants and flowers.

Before you read the 3 ideas, and make a decoration plan you must first decide on a theme. A theme could be mostly green, tropical, colorful or white. For example if you wanted to achieve a tropical environment, you wouldn't go and buy a dozen lilacs or roses, your theme might include small fake palm trees, with tall green plants and maybe a fake gecko to lay next to one or your plants.

Here are 3 ideas you can use to utilize nature's natural beauty in your everyday life.

  1. You can try a tropical theme. What's better than being in an environment that reflects a warm, colorful, green and vibrant impression in your home or office? The best way to achieve this is by using lots of green, and tall, strong plants. Tropical environments grow year round, so everything is always full, green and strong. A good combination would be 2 or 3 small fake trees, that can be placed in the corners of your room or office. While incorporating long, bright green real plants to place on your desk and window sill, giving you that real, fresh oxygen to go along with the fake trees.
  2. Try to achieve a camping vibe. I love camping, and will always enjoy the lush, thick evergreens and the fresh air that comes along with it. The smell of a camp fire, and the sounds of summer birds chirping. This theme can be achieved by combining larger, darker plants and a collage with autumn leaves and pine cones. A great addition to this setup would be an outdoor, autumn or camp fire scented candle from your favorite candle shop.
  3. A simple indoor garden with plants and flowers. You can never go wrong with the simple, indoor garden type of environment by utilizing small green plants and flowers. Any particular color scheme can be achieved using indoor plants and flowers, if it's a color scheme in particular that you desire. Roses and other flowers, even silk flowers come in just about any color you can imagine, and so do orchids, which are very popular and attractive in any situation.

Those are 3 great, easy to do ideas you can use to decorate your home or workplace using indoor plants and flowers. Creating a nature oriented theme for your living or work space always creates a better energy, and natural feeling to any indoor location.

Rosemary Flower Is Said To Represent Constancy And Loyalty

The rosemary flower is an exceptionally small and bright blossom that blooms from a woody, perennial herb plant. These flowers, which grow from the genus rosmarinus in the family lamiaceae, are native to regions of the Mediterranean. These herbs are best known for their needle-shaped evergreen leaves, which sprout for either trailing or upright plants. They are generally very long, and – though comparatively small – are quite broad in structure; their upper sides are a dark green, while their underbelly is a light, ashy white with small, dense hairs. The flowers themselves only begin to develop when the plant is fully mature, and may be seen in hues of blue, purple, pink and white.

The rosemary flower is often overlooked, as these plants are best known for their flavorful leaves – which are most commonly used in food and folk remedies. However, these blossoms have found their own place in storytelling and custom. In some legends, these blooms are said to improve memory, and thus – over time – they have become a large part of both weddings and funerals. Rosemary springs have long been thrown into open graves to show respect for the dead, and to tell them that they will not be forgotten; on the other hand, wreaths and garlands are made of these flowers – which are most frequently worn by the bride – and are retained as a keepsake, so that the couple may always be reminded of their wedding day.

The rosemary flower has also been used in divination and magic. One such example tells of the plant being potted and assigned the name of several potential love interests. The plant that grew healthy and strong belonged to the most suitable candidate. In addition to naming a new love, these blossoms were often used as love charms – cloth dolls were sewn and stuffed with rosemary to attract love; bunches of rosemary sprigs were carried by newly married couples to bring about fertility; while sachets filled with the dried flowers could be placed under a pillow, in a linen drawer or under a doormat to either dream of your next love, bring about the start of a sensual attachment, or attract your lover right to your door.

In addition to symbolizing remembrance, the rosemary flower is said to represent fidelity, as well as constancy and loyalty. These blossoms are most commonly traded between old and new lovers alike – to show that they will always be true to each other. They are also sometimes given to both lovers and friends that have to leave, so as to express the notion that they will always be remembered.

Here in Southern Andalucia the recent sunny weather has brought out the first flowers of the herb Rosemary or Rosmarinus Officionalis which in Latin means"dew of the sea". Wild rosemary on the hillsides flowers alongside the first flush of almond blossom, and makes a welcome flash of colour in the herb garden. This versatile herb is also a useful natural ingredient for both the hair and scalp and also in several skin care preparations.

Its ability to stimulate the circulation helps the skin to eliminate toxins and to regain a healthy sebum production therefore making it ideal for both overly greasy skin problems and extra dry skin irritations, however it is perhaps best known for its wonderful effects on the scalp and hair. For centuries people have been steeping handfuls of this aromatic herb in boiling spring water as a general hair rinse and tonic. Its toning effect on the scalp stimulates the circulation which inturn stimulates hair growth and general hair strength. Macerating the gently crushed herb in an oil of choice such as Olive or Jojoba and then using this oil to massage into the scalp can help to reduce more severe scalp problems such as seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff.

I have recently combined pure locally distilled rosemary essential oil and the algae spirulina in one of my to aid the treatment of overly greasy skin. The concentrated spirulina powder helps to detoxify and also feeds the skin with nutrients, and gives this soap a lovely soft green colour combined with the rosemary oil that stimulates the circulation and is an effective natural anti inflammatory, anti fungal and antiseptic. For an extra skin care tonic after washing with the rosemary and spirulina soap you can tone the skin with an easy to prepare tonic - by just steeping lightly crushed rosemary leaves in witchazel and then gently dabbing this onto the face, before moisturizing if necessary.

Colorado Landscapers Add More Texture And Beauty

Colorado landscapers and gardeners should be very thankful for the beautiful backdrop provided by the Rocky Mountains for their landscape designs. However, there are many challenges being faced by these people when it comes to their landscaping needs. One thing is the limited water resources that for people in eastern Colorado, so they have to create their inspiration by adding adapted shrubs and flowers to add more texture and beauty to their design. Being in the USDA hardiness zones 4 to 6, Colorado landscapers also have to content with soils rich in alkaline that need constant organic amendments and which experience frequent drought period.

Because of limited water supplies, xeriscaping is very popular in Colorado. The basic principle of xeriscaping involves the limited use of turf grass, but instead using ornamental grasses like buffalo grass, blue grama, bluestem, switch grass and feather reed grass. This is because they grow well in poorer soils and have lower water requirements than shrubs and flowering plants. Xeriscaping also involves selecting water-wise plants, using efficient irrigation practices and assisting plant survival through the application of soil amendments and mulches. Suggestion for water-wise plants include penstemon, prairie zinnia, Mojave sage, coreopsis and showy black-eyed susans.

Aside from xeriscaping techniques, rock gardens are also a good idea for Colorado landscapers. It will not only help you solve the problem with water supply, but also gives you the luxury of using the many colorful and decorative rocks available locally. Some of the most commonly used rocks for landscaping available in the region includes the moss rock and Colorado red rock. By Planting A Garden Stocked With Beautiful Flowers

Imagine a never ending supply of beautiful flowers for your home, bouquets and arrangements to give to friends, flowers to pluck at will for gifts, get well visits, anniversaries and birthdays. By planting a garden stocked with flowers that happily give up their blooms for your pleasure, you can have fresh flower arrangements in every room in your home all throughout the spring and summer.

To create your own flower garden, start with a sunny spot in your yard. A garden spot that gets 6 to 8 hours of direct sun a day is ideal. It should be within easy reach for watering, since a cut flower garden will need daily watering during any dry spells. You'll also want to design it to make it easy for you to reach all the flowers in it, so a raised bed that can be approached on four sides is perfect. If you decide to plant against a fence or as a border, make sure that you can get to all the plants without stepping on others by putting in footpaths or trenches for walking.

The best way to start your garden is with bulbs planted in the autumn. Daffodils and tulips are among the most popular spring bouquet flowers. By getting them in the ground in the autumn, you'll be able to start cutting early in the spring.

Naturalized bulbs look beautiful in a wooded setting. You can plant them and leave them to multiply. After the bulbs bloom the foliage will die down, but you can intersperse bulbs with ground covers and other perennials for a carefree and beautiful garden. For a natural look you should arrange your bulbs informally. If you toss them and plant them where they land, with small adjustments for spacing, it'll look much better than if you arrange them.

Perennials are the basic flowers for any garden. Each year they die and renew themselves for the next growing season. They are long-lived and last for many seasons. Perennials are also, historically, among our oldest plants. They have been cultivated for centuries and often, as a result of breeding and crossbreeding, bear no resemblance to their wild forebears. In some of the perennials, the blossoms have become so specialized through centuries of cultivation that they no longer grow 'seeds.

Annuals are also of use as a filler between shrubs set some distance apart. This permits the shrub to grow, yet prevents too stark an appearance. The sowing of annuals, of course, depends upon the class to which they belong. The hardier flowers, such as larkspur, poppies and cornflowers, can be profitably planted in late fall. The ground preparation must be just as careful as for spring planting.

Flowers can add a perfume as well as a visual aspect to your outdoor area. You may choose climbing plants that flower each year. These will take several years to reach their full potential but once they do they will create climbing plants of color on a gazebo, a fence or even up the side of a house. If you are looking for a variety that will provide lots of color, try the blue trumpet vine. This climbing plant blooms from autumn through summer and has bright blue flowers on a twining stem.

There are a number of ways to solve the problems of short-flowering periods and the resultant unsightly spaces. One way is to intersperse perennials with annuals and other bulbs and flowering plants whose bloom occurs either later or earlier than that of the perennials. Some perennials are easy to transplant: chrysanthemums, for example, can be moved from one place to another with no noticeable effect on their vigor. This is another way to keep color and bloom throughout the growing season. A garden of perennials, either by themselves or mixed with annuals and other bulbs, should be placed along a path, or as a border, with a background of trees, shrubs, a wall or fence.

The background shows the brilliant coloring to best advantage. Some varieties can flourish in the shade, such as anemone, lily of the valley, day lilies, sweet pea, primrose, hollyhock, harebell and peonies, but these flowers must be chosen carefully and faced so that some sun reaches them every day.

Roses are an entire subject of their own, but they deserve special mention when discussing cut flower gardens. Rambling and climbing varieties of roses are especially suited to cut flower gardens, putting out masses of blooms and responding to cutting with even more flowers. Trail a rambling rose along a wooden fence rail and you'll have sweet smelling roses for your bedroom dresser all summer long.

Flower Bulbs For Beautiful Container Gardening

As a group, flower bulbs are outstanding plants—colorful, showy, and generally easy to grow for container gardening. Many have evergreen foliage; with others, the leaves ripen after flowering and the bulbs are stored and started again, year after year. Some flower bulbs are hardy, others, tender, though what is, and is not hardy, in a particular area is a matter of winter temperature averages. In cold regions, tender types—tuberous begonias, gloxinias, and calla lilies—can be treated like summer in container gardens. This gives the gardener a wide variety to grow from earliest spring to late fall.

Dutch flower bulbs include crocus, snowdrops, eranthis or winter aconites, chionodoxas, scillas, grape hyacinths, leucojums or snowflakes, Dutch hyacinths, daffodils, and tulips, the pride of northern spring gardens. Though hardy, they are not adapted to garden containers outdoors where temperatures drop much below freezing. They require the protection of a shed, unheated cellar or cold frame. Gardening Pots can also be dug into a trench in the ground for the winter and covered with a thick blanket of marsh hay or straw. Where temperatures do not go below freezing, Dutch flower bulbs can be left outdoors in gardening pots over the winter.

For best results in a container garden, start with fresh, firm, large-sized flower bulbs each fall. Insure good drainage in the bottom of each garden pot and use a light soil with bone meal added. If in clay pots, plunge during the rooting period in damp peat moss to prevent rapid drying out. If this occurs too often, roots will be injured and flowers will be poor. When weather permits, after the danger of freezing passes, put your container garden outside where they are to flower or in a nursery row until they reach the bud stage. After blooming, move your container garden where foliage can ripen unseen.

For fragrance, concentrate on Dutch hyacinths, excellent for bedding large planter boxes or raised beds. Daffodils look well grouped around trees or large shrubs, as birches and forsythias. Tulips, formal in character, combine delightfully with pansies, violas, wall flowers, forget-me-nots, marguerites, English daisies, and annual candytuft in container gardens.

As already indicated, in cold areas, Dutch flower bulbs cannot be potted or planted in small window boxes and left outdoors unprotected for the winter. They can, however, be set out in large planters and boxes, deep and wide enough to contain plenty of soil. The garden pots should be one and a half to two feet deep and about two feet wide. Set flower bulbs, with at least six inches of soil above them, planting them early enough in the fall so that they can make root growth before soil freezes hard. In penthouse gardens in New York City, Dutch bulbs have been grown successfully in this way, but it is always a risk. It makes no difference whether garden pots are made of wood, concrete, or other material; it is the amount of soil they hold that counts.

Actually, it is not the freezing of the soil that injures flower bulbs (this occurs in open ground), but it is the pressure and counter pressure exerted by frost on the sides of containers, which are firm and do not give. As a result, flower bulbs are bruised and thrust out of the soil, their roots torn. Where there is no hard freeze, but sufficient cold weather, hardy flower bulbs can be grown successfully in garden containers of small size.
Here is a partial list of flower bulbs that thrive in container gardens. They will help you with your container garden design。

Achimenes are warmth-loving trailing plants with neat leaves and tubular flowers in blue, lavender, red and white. Related to gloxinias and African violets, they are nice in hanging baskets and window boxes or in garden pots on tables, shelves, or wall brackets. Start the small tubers indoors and give plants a sheltered spot with protection from strong sun and wind. Achimenes, an old standby in the South, is worthy of more frequent planting.

Agapanthus or Blue Lily of the Nile is a fleshy-rooted evergreen plant, with strap leaves, often grown in tubs and urns on terraces and steps during the summer, when the tall blue spikes unfold. Culture is easy, but plants require a well-lighted, frost proof room or greenhouse in winter. This is an old-time favorite, often seen in the gardens of Europe. It is a perfect flower bulb for container gardening.

The Calla Lily is Showy, and outdoors in warmer regions, but a tender pot plant in the North. Most familiar is the white one with large, shiny, heart-shaped leaves. Start bulbs indoors in February or March in rich soil and, when weather settles, transfer to large gardening pots and take outdoors. Calla lilies do well in full sun or part shade, are heavy feeders and need much water. There is also a dainty yellow one with white-spotted leaves. Rest your flower bulbs after foliage ripens and grow again.

Colorful and free-flowering Dahlias provide bounteous cut blooms. Tall, large-flowering kinds can be grown only in large planters and boxes, but the dwarfs, even freer flowering, are excellent in small garden containers. Attaining one to two feet tall, they grow easily from tubers in average soil in sun or part shade. They may also be raised from seed sown indoors in February. If tubers are stored in peat or sand in a cool, frost proof place, they can be grown for years. Check bulbs during winter, and if shriveling, sprinkle lightly.
Gladiolus, the summer-flowering plant has spear like leaves and many hued spikes. Corms can be planted in garden containers outdoors after danger of frost is passed. Set them six inches apart and four to six inches deep. The best way to use these in container gardening is to planting a few every two to three weeks, giving you a succession of bloom in your container garden. Stake stems before flowers open. After the leaves turn brown, or there is a frost, lift corms, cut off foliage and dust with DDT to control the tiny sucking thrips. After dusting, store corms in a dry place at 45 to 55 degrees F for future planting.

Gloxinias, another Summer-flowering plant and tender with large, tubular blooms of red, pink, lavender, purple, or white, and broad velvety rosettes of leaves. Start tubers indoors and don't take outside until weather is warm. Since the leaves are easily broken or injured by wind or rain, put plants in a sheltered spot. The low broad eaves of contemporary houses, with restricted sun, offer an appropriate setting for rows of pots or window boxes filled with gay gloxinias.

Romantic Valentine’s Day Roses For You

Roses are undoubtedly the most popular flower when it comes to Valentine’s Day. Roses have always been a symbol of romance, beauty, passion and love.

There are several legends about this well-loved flower. One is that of a beautiful woman called Rodanthe, who was pursued by many impassioned suitors. They broke down her door and angered the goddess Diana, who then turned Rodanthe into a flower and her suitors into thorns.

Gift the secret of producing beautiful, fragrant English roses this Valentine’s Day, no matter where in the world you are, with a MyGardenSchool course on growing roses: David Austin’s Guide to Growing Roses.
The course features step by step video tutorials from a world leading authority on roses, downloadable course notes, and the facility to chat with tutors and fellow classmates online, in a ‘virtual classroom’. The technology is very intuitive and easy to use.

While no woman would turn down a dozen red roses, find out the other messages you can send by giving a different color or blending the colors in your bouquet.

Red: Love and Romance
One of the most universal of all symbols, the red rose represents true love.
It has also appeared throughout history and across cultures as both a political and religious symbol.

Yellow: Friendship, Joy, Get Well
Throughout history, yellow has been closely associated with the sun, making these roses excellent for cheering people up. Yellow roses send a message of appreciation and platonic love without the romantic subtext of other colors. The color represents feelings of joy and delight.

Pink: Love, Gratitude, Appreciation
Pink carries with it the connotation of grace and elegance, as well as sweetness and poetic romance.
Dark pink roses are symbolic of gratitude and appreciation, and are a traditional way to say thanks.
Light pink roses are associated with gentleness and admiration, and can also be used as an expression of sympathy.

White: Purity, Innocence, Sympathy, Spirituality
Early tradition used white roses as a symbol for true love, an association which would later become the hallmark of the red rose.

Also known as the bridal rose, the white rose is a traditional wedding flower. In this sense, white represents unity, virtue, and the pureness of a new love. White roses are also associated with honor and reverence, which makes them a fitting memorial for a departed loved one.

Orange: Desire, Enthusiasm and Passion
A literal mixture of yellow and red, orange roses were seen as a bridge between friendship symbolized by yellow roses and love represented by red roses. They can be an expression of fascination, or a gift to say 'I'm proud of you.'

Lavender: Enchantment, Majesty, Love at First Sight
The color purple has a traditional association with royalty. In this regard, shades of lavender roses suggest an air of regal majesty and splendor.

7 Steps Toward Success With Garden Roses

Plant breeders have given us roses that grow well under difficult conditions and bloom almost continuously from early summer to frost. Proper plant nutrition is easy and simple to provide with the use complete plant food that supplies all the vital elements needed from the soil. Insect and disease problems can be prevented easily with regular use of insecticide-fungicide that controls most chewing insects, sucking insects, and fungus diseases. With these aids, you can grow roses successfully.
GOOD STOCK: Buy good plants, preferably No. 1, two years old, field grown and budded plants. Plants that are not pruned should have 3 or more heavy 18-inch canes. Pruned plants should have canes with a diameter of at least 1/4 inch at the top. Plants potted in tar paper pots are preferred by many gardeners since they can be transplanted most any time of the year.
PLANTING: Select a sunny, well-drained location. Trim off all broken and bruised roots, cut top growth back to 6 to 8 inches. Dig planting holes at least 6 inches deeper than needed for the plant roots. Make holes large enough to accommodate roots without crowding or bending. Place a handful of small rocks or pebbles in the bottom of holes to facilitate drainage. Mix 1 tablespoonful of fertilizer with the soil placed over the drainage material. Cover this mixture with plain soil, bringing the level to desired planting depth. Make a mound in the center to receive plant. Set plant roots over this mound, spread roots, and fill in with soil. Firm the soil tightly 2 or 3 times while filling the hole.

FEEDING: Hybrid Tea, Polyantha, Floribunda Types: The first feeding should come in early spring as soon as leaf buds begin to swell. Clear away mulch and work plant food into soil around the plant. Use 1 rounded tablespoonful of fertilizer per plant (or 1 pound per 25 square feet of bed area). Second feeding should be made at the same rate and immediately following the first heavy bloom. Third feeding, also at same rate, should be made in late summer ... northern areas not later than August 15. In soutern areas, where blooming extends into October and November, a fourth feeding should be made about the first of October. Many growers follow a regular monthly feeding program during the growing season with good results.
Tea Roses: Use one half of the above amounts, applying in a similar manner and at the same times.
Hybrid Perpetual, Climbing, Shrub Roses:Feed 1 rounded tablespoonful of fertilizer to each square foot of space around the bush in early spring. Feed again when blooms start to appear. In both cases work the fertilizer lightly into the soil to within 4 inches of the plant.
SUMMER CARE: The cultural practices differ but little in various sections of the country, with exception of timing of operations that depend upon climate. Artificial watering may be necessary if summer rainfall is insufficient. If soil is well drained, there is not much danger of overwatering. When watering, soak the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches ... do not merely sprinkle. CULTIVATION is necessary to eliminate weeds and keep soil loose. Deep cultivation in midsummer is harmful when the roots are close to the surface. MULCHING during the summer will eliminate weeds, necessity of cultivation, and reduce moisture evaporation. Mulches should be applied 2 or 3 weeks before roses come into bloom.

DISEASES AND PESTS: Black-spot, mildew, and blight together with insects, such as aphids, thrips, and red spider, are some of the more troublesome rose disease and insect problems. Control is easy and prevention is practical with the regular use of chemicals, that controls most fungus diseases and chewing and sucking insects. Regular dusting every week or 10 days will make the disease-insect problem easy to handle.
PRUNING: Bush type roses should be pruned in the early spring when the leaf buds begin to swell, but before growth starts. Follow these basic principles:
  1. Remove all wood killed or injured during the winter, cutting back to solid tissue.
  2. Remove all weak, twiggy growth.
  3. Shape plants by cutting strong canes back to -a uniform height, removing as little healthy wood as possible. Remove very old canes by cutting off at the ground level.
  4. Cut ordinary hybrid varieties back to about 18 to 24 inches. Ramblers should be pruned after blooming by removing old unwanted canes at the base.
WINTER PROTECTION: It's not extreme cold that kills roses but rather the frequent alternate freezing and thawing that heaves the plant, thus breaking the roots. The winter sun and dry winds take moisture away from the canes and make winter injury more of a problem. Winter mulching with straw, peat moss, or other material is advisable in all but the extreme southern sections of the United States. This mulch regulates the soil temperature and tempers the effects of freezing and thawing. Pull soil up around each plant to a height of about 6 inches after the first frost, then after the ground is frozen r mulch.

Do You Love Dahlias?

About Dahlias
Dahlias are a plant that have a seemingly endless classification of flower types. Some are classified as single while others are double and some grow like round balls of petals. The flowers range in size from one inch to a foot in diameter. Likewise the variety of dahlias available to the grower range in height from less than one foot to over seven feet. Dahlia color range is also great and allows you the chance to grow many varieties for different effects in your garden.
Dahlias bllom from midsummer through the first frost of late fall or winter and some even manage to last a bit beyond this. They do great as late bloomers in perennial plantings such as borders, but are also attractive as stand-alone plantings.
Dahlia flowers survive well as cuttings so if you grow them feel free to bring some in to your dining room table. They are both graceful and often explosive with color.

Planning
Dahlia will prefer full sun, but will also tolerate light shade. Fertile, rich soil with an abundance of potassium and phosphorus will be appreciated by these flowers. If your soil tends toward acidity then adding lime to your soil can be key to a successful dahlia planting.
Preparation
Plant new dahlia roots about a week before the date of your average last frost. You will lay them horizontally in a hole about six to eight inches deep. If you will be growing a tall variety you may want to place the stake in the ground at the time of planting the root in order that you do not accidentally hurt the root later when putting a stake in the ground for support.
Care
If you want bushier plants that do not gow as tall you may pinch back dahlias when they are about ten to twelves inches tall.

If you live in an area with frost you will need to dig up the tuberous roots of dahlia and store them over the winter. This chore is not as bad as it sounds as they come up fairly easily.
Pests / Disease
Thrips, mites, aphids and slugs are the most likely pests to take interest in the dahlia in your garden.
Harvesting
There are thousands of cultivars of dahlia and nearly all are superb for cuttings. Cut flowers just before opening to provide the longest term display. With all the varieties available it is possible to make a stunning display of flowers for the table just from dahlia.
