Sunflowers grow very fast and have beautiful blooms so they are very popular among flowers growers. To recognize a sunflower is very easy because of its bright and eye-catching yellow color. But there are some species of sunflowers that are having so many types making it difficult to recognize their plants. There are some features of these flowers that can help you to recognize and identify sunflower plants. Here I am going to describe these.
Notice the Growth of Plants
If you are facing problem in identifying these plants, then the first thing to follow is paying attention to their growth. The daily growth of sunflower plants is quite easy to notice as they can grow tall in several inches daily. Also remember that the flowers on these plants start blooming in late summer.

The next method to identify these plants is to feel and watch the leaves carefully. The leaves are of dark green color having coarse edges. As far as feeling the leaves is concerned, they give a furry and shaggy feeling making it easy to recognize.
Watch their Position Carefully
As the sunflowers turn their heads towards the sun during daytime and stoop in the night so this feature can be proved very helpful in identifying these plants.

Praise You In This suffering

Most of us have faced tragedy. Some more than others. Some have yet to, but likely will in their lifetime. Sometimes I feel as though I have experienced more than my share. Loss, being the primary pain I have suffered through many times over, and continue to cope with daily. The other day I was interviewed for a lovely blog, which posted today. The last question of the interview stopped me in my tracks. I was asked if there was anything else I would like readers to know about me. Hmmm, I thought, here’s my chance, an opportunity to say something hopefully profound. A chance I don’t take often enough, after all, most of you come here for crafty inspiration, not personal or spiritual encouragement. But this week especially, I feel more than compelled to share with you the blessings I have found through personal suffering, so I hope you’ll indulge me this once.
I answered the interview question with this: I think it’s important to acknowledge that it’s by God’s amazing grace that I am able to create the things I do. It’s been an extremely difficult few years for me and crafting & blogging helps me move through tragedy. Having opportunities to share my gifts with others is a blessing of comfort in itself. If you’ve been a long time follower of my blog you may know that I have had a challenging few years, as on few occasions I have mentioned a thing or two about my life. My sadness began 16 years ago upon the stillbirth of our daughter, Grace. Though I suffered extremely dark months, even years, I was ultimately blessed with 3 amazing and healthy children. Though they are all teenagers right now, I absolutely adore being their mother.
Seven years ago, my beloved, oldest sister died suddenly, to her addictions, at age 40 in Arkansas. Her youngest child, Sarah, was only 5 at the time so Jeff and I welcomed her into our family and adopted her as our own. She is now a beautiful and wonderful 13 year old young lady.
A few years later, my oldest brother also died suddenly of heart failure at his home in Michigan. Then last Thanksgiving, my other brother took his own life in Colorado. It wasn’t until my only surviving sibling, my sister Jennifer, and I came together to make arrangements for him that we ever got to know our young niece, his only child, Ashley.
Last Monday Jeff and I flew Ashley, now 14, to California to visit our family for a week and to meet her 3 cousins. Here’s the problem… we never want to send her home. We’ve grown to love and adore her and I thank God for blessing us with this precious new relationship.
To simply sum it up, I just wanted to encourage those who have faced a loss of any kind, whether a life, a job, an opportunity, a relationship, to look hard every single day for the blessings that God is laying before you, even in death and sorrow. Know that He holds every tear you cry. As time passes, you may be able to see His blessings a bit more clear as they pile up beautifully around you. I can’t change any tragic thing that has happened in my lifetime but I continue to look ahead toward the amazing grace God has laid out in the mysterious path of my life.

Herb Flowers

Most herb flowers are just as tasty as the foliage and very attractive when used in your salads. Add some petals to any dish you were already going to flavor with the herb.Alliums (leeks, chives, garlic, garlic chives) - Known as the "Flowering Onions." There are approximately four hundred species that includes the familiar onion, garlic, chives, ramps, and shallots. All members of this genus are edible. Their flavors range from mild onions and leeks right through to strong onion and garlic.
All parts of the plants are edible. The flowers tend to have a stronger flavor than the leaves and the young developing seed-heads are even stronger. We eat the leaves and flowers mainly in salads. The leaves can also be cooked as a flavoring with other vegetables in soups, etc.Chive Blossoms (Allium schoenoprasum) - Use whenever a light onion flavor and aroma is desired. Separate the florets and enjoy the mild, onion flavor in a variety of dishes.Garlic Blossoms (Allium sativum) - The flowers can be white or pink, and the stems are flat instead of round. The flavor has a garlicky zing that brings out the flavor of your favorite food. Milder than the garlic bulb. Wonderful in salads.
Angelica (Angelica archangelica) - Depending on the variety, flower range from pale lavender-blue to deep rose. It has a flavor similar to licorice. Angelica is valued culinary from the seeds and stems, which are candied and used in liqueurs, to the young leaves and shoots, which can be added to a green salad. Because of its celery-like flavor, Angelica has a natural affinity with fish. The leaves have a stronger, clean taste and make a interesting addition to salads. In its native northern Europe, even the mature leaves are used, particularly by the Laplanders, as a natural fish preservative.
Many people in the cold Northern regions such as Greenland, Siberia, and Finland consider Angelica a vegetable, and eat the stems raw, sometimes spread with butter. Young leaves can be made into a tea.Anise Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum) - Both flowers and leaves have a delicate anise or licorice flavor. Some people say the flavor reminds them of root beer. The blossoms make attractive plate garnishes and are often used in Chinese-style dishes. Excellent in salads.Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) - Sweet, floral flavor, with lemon and citrus notes.
Flowers look beautiful and taste good too in a glass of champagne, with chocolate cake, or as a garnish for sorbets or ice creams. Lavender lends itself to savory dishes also, from hearty stews to wine-reduced sauces. Diminutive blooms add a mysterious scent to custards, flans or sorbets. NOTE: Do not consume lavender oil unless you absolutely know that it has not be sprayed and is culinary safe.

Amaryllis

Amaryllis is a bulbous plant, with each bulb being 5–10 cm in diameter. It has several strap-shaped, green leaves, 30–50 cm long and 2–3 cm broad, arranged in two rows. The leaves are produced in the autumn or early spring in warm climates depending on the onset of rain and eventually die down by late spring. The bulb is then dormant until late summer. The plant is not frost-tolerant, nor does it do well in tropical environments since they require a dry resting period between leaf growth and flower spike production.
From the dry ground in late summer (August in zone 7) each bulb produces one or two leafless stems 30–60 cm tall, each of which bears a cluster of 2 to 12 funnel-shaped flowers at their tops. Each flower is 6–10 cm diameter with six tepals (three outer sepals, three inner petals, with similar appearance to each other). The usual color is white with crimson veins, but pink or purple also occur naturally. The common name "naked lady" stems from the plant's pattern of flowering when the foliage has died down.
The species was introduced into cultivation at the beginning of the eighteenth century. They reproduce slowly either by bulb division or seeds and have gradually naturalized from plantings in urban and suburban areas throughout the lower elevations and coastal areas in much of the West Coast of the USA since these environments mimic their native South African habitat.
Many bulbs sold as Amaryllis and described as 'ready to bloom for the holidays' actually belong to the allied genus Hippeastrum, despite being labeled as 'Amaryllis' by sellers and nurseries. Adding to the name confusion, some bulbs of other species with a similar growth and flowering pattern are also sometimes called this plant's common name "naked ladies". Some of those species have their own more widely used and accepted common names, such as the Resurrection Lily (Lycoris squamigera).
There is an "Amaryllis Belladonna Hybrid" which was bred in the 1800s in Australia. No one knows the exact species it was crossed with to produce interesting color variations of white, cream, peach, magenta and nearly red hues. The hybrids were crossed back onto the original amaryllis belladonnas and with each other to produce naturally seed bearing crosses that come in a very wide range of flower sizes, shapes, stem heights and intensities of pink. Pure white varieties with bright green stems were bred as well. The hybrids are quite distinct in that the many shades of pink also have stripes, veining, darkened edges, white centers and light yellow centers also setting them apart from the original light pink. In addition, the hybrids often produce flowers in a fuller circle rather than a "side facing" habit like the "old fashioned" pink. The hybrids are able to adapt to year round watering and fertilization but can also tolerate completely dry summer conditions if need be.

Flower care instructions

When your bouquet arrives, some blooms may be a little tired from the journey. This is completely normal, simply follow these care instructions and your bouquet will perk up soon. For quick recovery, cut stems, add flower food and stand in deep water for a few hours prior to arranging in a vase.
Choose a clean vase and use fresh lukewarm water. Avoid metal containers as they neutralise the effects of flower food.
Add all of the flower food provided, following the guidelines on the sachet.
Carefully remove the packaging from the base of the flowers.
Strip off all leaves that fall below the water line, as these will decompose and contaminate the water.
Cut 2 - 3cm off all stems using a clean sharp knife or scissors. Cut at a sharp angle so the stem can absorb water more effectively and place immediately in water. Avoid cutting through nodes on the flower stems.
Display the flowers in a cool, light location away from draughts, direct sunlight, radiators and fresh fruit.
Remember to top up the vase water daily and remove faded flowers as they occur.
To refresh your flowers re-cut the stems every 2 – 3 days, and replace in fresh lukewarm water.
Note: Bouquet contents may be a skin irritant and harmful if eaten. Your bouquet/plant should not be placed directly on to furniture or polished surfaces as scratching or staining may occur, we advise you use a protective mat.

Pink Puya

The Pink Puya has a grass-like appearance, forming a rosette of slender, arching 3-foot leaves. The plant sends out a large 3-foot flower stalk that arches outward for easy viewing. About 2 feet of the stalk is covered with flowers, each about an inch long. The petals of this variety can range in color from turquoise-green to violet, with bright orange anthers and pollen. This is an "extra pink" form of the species, from the Salta province of Argentina. The bracts start out a gorgeous flamingo-pink and slowly mature to a glowing lobster-red! Most Puyas bloom only in spring, but this form can bloom any time from spring through late fall.Full of color! The Pink Puya (Puya dyckioides) is a beautiful, rare Pineapple relative from Argentina that you probably haven't seen before. Not only do the flowers have a gorgeous color combination, but the colors deepen as the cluster matures! This exotic Bromeliad is hardy down to 20-22°F (-6°C). Despite being difficult to find, the Pink Puya is a very easy plant to grow.Puyas are terrestrial Bromeliads that are easy to raise. They grow in ordinary cactus soil, unlike the tree-dwelling Bromeliads. They enjoy sun, but will appreciate some afternoon shade in warmer areas.
They should be able to handle temperatures in the low 90s (33°C) without a problem, but extremely hot or dry conditions might stress them. Protect young plants from frost the first couple of years. They grow well in pots and can be moved indoors over the winter.Over the years, the plant forms a large colony of offshoots up to 6 feet across. You may remove the offshoots if you wish and grow them in pots. A common complaint of Puya species are the large, sharp thorns on the leaves, however this one has tiny, barely-noticeable thorns, so it is much more "user friendly" in the garden! Be patient with the Pink Puya, as it will reach flowering size at 6-7 years old. You'll be rewarded for your patience with dazzling, large flower clusters from this choice Bromeliad.
