What's The Meaning Of Amaryllis?

We do it all the time. We surprise someone with a bunch of bright yellow flowers to cheer them up. We declare our fervent passion withtwo-dozen velvety roses. We sense the personalities of different flowers and intuitively choose one over another to fit our mood or the occasion.Tall stemmed, with trumpet-like blooms, the amaryllis symbolizes radiant beauty. However, Greek mythology has it that the flower got its start from a shy shepherdess, who pierced her heart and created a crimson flower.

Mythology

In Greek mythology, Amaryllis was a shepherdess who loved Alteo, a shepherd with Hercules' strength and Apollo's beauty. However, Alteo only loved flowers. He'd often said that he would only love a girl who bought him a new flower. So, Amaryllis dressed in maiden's white and appeared at Alteo's door for 30 nights, each time piercing her heart with a golden arrow. When Alteo finally opened his door, he found a crimson flower, sprung from the blood of Amaryllis's heart.

Contemporary Meaning

The word "amaryllis" comes from the Greek word "amaryssein," which means "to sparkle," referring to the bloom. Today, the amaryllis symbolizes pride, determination and radiant beauty--the kind that emanates from an inner source and flowers outward.

Features

Amaryllis has tall, thick stems and large, colorful flowers. Bloom colors includes red, pink, white, cream, orange and striped and variegated shades of several other colors.

Background

The amaryllis is native to South Africa, the Americas and parts of the Caribbean. It was discovered in Chile in 1828 by Eduard Frederich Poeppig, a physician and plant hunter from Leipzig, Germany.

Fun Fact

An amaryllis bulb can produce flowers for up to 75 years.

How to Take Care of Cymbidium Orchid

The Cymbidium orchids are not only kept as houseplants; they are popular garden flowers as well in regions where the climate is right for them. The genus Cymbidium was first described in 1799 by a Swedish botanist and taxonomist named Olof Swartz. By then, Cymbidium orchids had already been cultivated in Asia for over a millennium. In Europe, this orchid group became highly popular during the Victoria era and Cymbidium orchids are still commonly found in floral arrangements. The name Cymbidium comes from the Greek word kumbos which means ‘cavity’. Olof Swartz picked this name because of the form of the lip base in Cymbidium orchids.
There is currently over 50 different described species of Cymbidium orchids but only a small number is commercially grown since the floral trade prefers to use hybrids rather than original species. The wild Cymbidium orchids can be found in tropical and subtropical parts of Asia and northern Australia, particularly in higher elevations where the climate is cooler.
One of the great aspects of keeping a Cymbidium orchid is the fact that these orchids can bloom during the winter months. Provide your Cymbidium orchid with the right orchid care and you can have a flower that brings you much joy when most other indoor plats are resting.
Cymbidium orchid medium
Cymbidium orchids suffer when forced to stand “with their feet wet” in a soggy medium and using a well draining medium for your orchids is therefore very important if you want them to thrive. Fir bark mix for terrestrial orchids is recommended in mild summer climates, while a finer orchid mix can be used in warmer summer areas.
Recommended Cymbidium orchid temperature
As mentioned above, the Cymbidium orchids hail from tropical and subtropical regions, but they can actually survive even prolonged exposure to 45˚ F (7˚ C) since they are adapted to a life at higher elevations where the climate can be quite chilly even in the tropics. Cymbidium can survive temperature extremes that would kill most other tropical orchids. There are examples of well established Cymbidium orchids that have survived in gardens where the temperature occasionally drop down to 28˚ F (-2.2˚ C) for several hours during the very coldest winter nights. This is however not ideal and frost can cause serious damage even to this hardy little plant. Spikes and flowers should never be exposed to temperatures below 35˚ F (1.7˚ C). When it comes to heat the Cymbidium orchids can cope with fairly high day temperatures provided that the night temperature is considerably lower, ideally around 50-65˚ F (10-18˚ C).
Cymbidium orchid light
A Cymbidium orchid prefers to be placed in a spot where it will receive plenty of mild morning and afternoon sun while being shaded from the intense mid-day rays. A Cymbidium orchid with yellowing leaves is most likely being exposed to too intense sun light. Leaves that become much darker than normal is on the other hand a sign of to little light.
Cymbidium orchid care and watering
A lot of Cymbidium orchids fail to thrive since they are given too much och too little water. It is hard to provide any general recommendations since the ideal amount and frequency depends on factors such as air humidity and temperature in the room where you keep your Cymbidium. If you live in a temperate part of the world where the indoor air is fairly dry due to central heating, then watering your Cymbidium once a week or every 10th day is a good start. Keep a watchful eye over your orchid and be prepared to change the amount and frequency if necessary. A soggy medium is never recommended, but letting the orchid become too dry can also cause problems.
Cymbidium orchid nutrients
A prospective Cymbidium owner should ideally purchase two different types of fertilizers: high nitrogen (25-9-9) and low nitrogen (6-25-25). The low nitrogen fertilizer should be used from August to then end of January and the high nitrogen fertilizer during the rest of the year. For most brands one teaspoon of fertilizer per month will be ideal. To not force feed your Cymbidium orchid all the nutrients in one big serving per month, since this is a very unnatural way of obtaining nutrients for the orchid. Split the dose up into several different servings throughout the month and your orchid will be much happier.
Repotting Cymbidium orchids
Repot your Cymbidium orchid once very second or third year, ideally during the period when you are giving it high nitrogen fertilizer.

Cattleya Orchid Care Tips

The Cattleya orchids are famous for producing large, flamboyant flowers with striking colours and intricate shapes. A typical Cattleya orchid flower consists of two fringed petals and a third one that has developed into a showy lip with a fringed margin. All three petals are quite narrow and the lip is often decorated with markings and dots. At the base of the Cattleya orchid flower the fringed petal margins fold into a tube. Each flower stalk grows from a so called pseudobulb.
The Cattleya orchids belong to the genus Cattleya in the family Orchidaceae. This genus currently contains 42 described species and a vast array of hybrids has been created for the floral trade. Cattleya hybrids can produce flowers that exceed 15 cm in length and you can get them in all colours except true blue and black. The number of flowers varies from just one to ten. The Cattleya orchids grow in tropical parts of the South American continent and up to Costa Rica in Central America.
Cattleya orchid medium
If you want to keep a Cattleya orchid, it is very important to provide it with the right type of medium. This orchid is not used to soggy soil and must be given a well draining potting medium such as coarse fir bark or medium coarse fir bark. Even with a well draining potting medium, over watering can lead to root rot, and green mould and snow mould can start growing in the potting medium. The Cattleya orchids are epiphytes which mean that their natural way of growing is by clinging to tree branches and similar. They are therefore ill equipped to deal with a soggy medium.
Temperature for Cattleya orchids
As mentioned above, the Cattleya orchids come from tropical parts of South and Central America and they will therefore prefer the 75-85˚ F (24-29˚ C) temperature range during the day. The recommended night temperature for Cattleya orchids is 60-65˚ F (15.5-18˚ C). If your Cattleya orchid is well established and healthy it can survive occasional temperature drops or spikes, as long as you don’t make a habit out of exposing it to sudden temperature extremes. Being kept in the wrong temperature range or exposed to a lot of changes is very dangerous for this orchid.

Tips For Planting Marigolds

Marigolds are among one of the flowers that have long life. These are very beautiful looking flowers having eye-catching colors like yellow, orange and red. Their blooming season starts from the mid-summers and ends with the first frost of fall season. Planting marigolds is almost effortless provided that their growing requirements are fulfilled. Here I am giving some instructions and tips regarding the plantation of marigold flowers:
Select Sunny Location
Marigolds thrive in full or partial sun so you should find a place accordingly.
Start Planting Process
You can start the planting process after the last snow fall of the season. If you want to grow them before the last frost then you can plant them indoors in such containers having potting soil. After the frost, you can change their place by replanting them outside in your garden. This whole process will help these flowers to produce blooms early in the season.
Select Area having Rich Soil
Now you will have to select a location having rich soil. Before planting the flowers, you will have to add fertilizer to the soil if it is poor in terms of richness. After adding manure, your next step is to dig the manure in soil using a shovel.
Sow the Seeds
Now the next step is to sow the seeds in the garden. The distance between the seeds and giant marigolds should be at least one to two feet. After sowing the seeds, they should be covered with a thin layer of soil. You can use trowel for this purpose.
Douse the Seeds
Next step is to drench the seeds with water using a water jug or pipe.
Keep the Soil Humid
Once the seeds start to germinate and plants are established, you should make sure to keep the soil damp. But here one thing should be kept in mind that soil should not be saturated with too much of water.
Add Mulch
In order to control the growth of weeds and to keep the moisture preserved around the plant, you should add mulch.
Water during Dry Weather
Another important tip is that, during the dry weather, water plants once or twice a week.
Remove Finished Blossoms
When your plants start flowering in mid-summer, you must deadhead the finished blossoms. It will help the plant to grow well and improve the look of marigold flowers.
Continue Periodic Watering
Episodic watering should be continued on weekly basis until after the first frost.

Everlasting Flowers

Otherwise known as “strawflowers” or technically of the family bracteata or bracteatum asteraceae, these vibrant, “papery” and somewhat intense blooms are often dried and the thing of childhood summer memories from trips to Baguio. I always thought of them as being a bit cheesy, a personal bias, but I spied these fresh bunches of the “everlasting flowers” and bought some at the FTI weekend market for PHP150 for three bunches.
Several of the flower heads were still quite tightly closed, while others were starting to open. Fresh, and with their stems, they were quite the stunner.
On closer inspection, they were quite intricate in pattern and their colors were incredibly robust and intense.
I took a low ceramic vase, cut the stems at about 7-8 inches in length, and stuck them in the vase without any water. I figured they might dry nicely and last a while. But honestly, I don’t know if that will work. I am writing this post 12 hours after I bought the flowers and they seem to be doing quite nicely. If you are interested, you can see more varieties of strawflowers.
whenever we go to Baguio , we always bring home these flowers…….how time flies , and how things change. before when we go up thru Kenon road, we can smell the pine scent, nowadays? don’t know if it’s safe to go thru that road. besides, you’ll get all the smog from the other vehicles when you roll down the window. i just wish they can improve Baguio, Value nature than commercialism. When you chose not to trim the tree, it'll develop instantly and might attain eighty to one hundred feet in height. It goes to nonetheless have the foliage and blossoms, but there won't be as lots of them as if it have been pruned into the pyramidal shape.
There are completely different cultivators of Magnolia trees. Some grow solely 20 toes tall, some grow 80 ft tall. You may be able to do a little research and discover the perfect cultivator for the location you have chosen on your tree.I think it’s important to acknowledge that it’s by God’s amazing grace that I am able to create the things I do. It’s been an extremely difficult few years for me and crafting & blogging helps me move through tragedy. Having opportunities to share my gifts with others is a blessing of comfort in itself. Tips To Make An Orchid Bloom

When people grow beautiful orchid flowers in their garden, they want it to bloom again and again but it is not possible without proper care and handling. Since I am an orchid lover, I have done some research to make orchids bloom time and again. During my research I found some wonderful tips which I will share with you:
Orchids bloom if they feel a 10 degree decrease in temperature at night. If you are growing orchids in such a place where seasonal weather can take care of temperature change then it is well and good otherwise you will have to adjust your thermostat.
In order to know about requirement of light, you will require examining color of orchid leaves. If leaves are dark green, it indicates more light requirements while on the other hand, yellowish, green or red leaves show that orchids are receiving too much of light. When I started growing orchids I made a mistake in determining light requirements so I would recommend you to properly take care of this matter because light requirements affect blooming of flowers.
Lighting should be adjusted gradually because light requirements vary with the types of orchids. Light should be increased in stages until a lush green shade appears in leaves. Increment in light is recommended to be gradual as extreme increase in sunlight can make orchids burn.
Remember that if orchids are grown in crowd, they are less likely to bloom. For this you can see whether roots are pressed against the side of pot or not. If it happens then you are required to repot orchid plant.
Watering carefully is another factor that needs special care because too much or too little watering can both spoil your plant. Orchids only bloom when watering conditions are absolutely right. Orchids should be watered only when surface of soil becomes dry. While watering orchids, also make sure that extra water is drained out of pot. For this pot should have drainage holes.
If you still feel that your efforts are not drawing desired results, you can visit a greenhouse. The staff there will give you important tips regarding blooming of that particular type of orchid which you have grown.
I hope that these tips are good enough for you to make your orchid bloom so follow these and have healthy orchid blooms.

Praise You In This suffering

Most of us have faced tragedy. Some more than others. Some have yet to, but likely will in their lifetime. Sometimes I feel as though I have experienced more than my share. Loss, being the primary pain I have suffered through many times over, and continue to cope with daily. The other day I was interviewed for a lovely blog, which posted today. The last question of the interview stopped me in my tracks. I was asked if there was anything else I would like readers to know about me. Hmmm, I thought, here’s my chance, an opportunity to say something hopefully profound. A chance I don’t take often enough, after all, most of you come here for crafty inspiration, not personal or spiritual encouragement. But this week especially, I feel more than compelled to share with you the blessings I have found through personal suffering, so I hope you’ll indulge me this once.
I answered the interview question with this: I think it’s important to acknowledge that it’s by God’s amazing grace that I am able to create the things I do. It’s been an extremely difficult few years for me and crafting & blogging helps me move through tragedy. Having opportunities to share my gifts with others is a blessing of comfort in itself. If you’ve been a long time follower of my blog you may know that I have had a challenging few years, as on few occasions I have mentioned a thing or two about my life. My sadness began 16 years ago upon the stillbirth of our daughter, Grace. Though I suffered extremely dark months, even years, I was ultimately blessed with 3 amazing and healthy children. Though they are all teenagers right now, I absolutely adore being their mother.
Seven years ago, my beloved, oldest sister died suddenly, to her addictions, at age 40 in Arkansas. Her youngest child, Sarah, was only 5 at the time so Jeff and I welcomed her into our family and adopted her as our own. She is now a beautiful and wonderful 13 year old young lady.
A few years later, my oldest brother also died suddenly of heart failure at his home in Michigan. Then last Thanksgiving, my other brother took his own life in Colorado. It wasn’t until my only surviving sibling, my sister Jennifer, and I came together to make arrangements for him that we ever got to know our young niece, his only child, Ashley.
Last Monday Jeff and I flew Ashley, now 14, to California to visit our family for a week and to meet her 3 cousins. Here’s the problem… we never want to send her home. We’ve grown to love and adore her and I thank God for blessing us with this precious new relationship.
To simply sum it up, I just wanted to encourage those who have faced a loss of any kind, whether a life, a job, an opportunity, a relationship, to look hard every single day for the blessings that God is laying before you, even in death and sorrow. Know that He holds every tear you cry. As time passes, you may be able to see His blessings a bit more clear as they pile up beautifully around you. I can’t change any tragic thing that has happened in my lifetime but I continue to look ahead toward the amazing grace God has laid out in the mysterious path of my life.

In its native northern Europe, even the mature leaves are used, particularly by the Laplanders, as a natural fish preservative.
Many people in the cold Northern regions such as Greenland, Siberia, and Finland consider Angelica a vegetable, and eat the stems raw, sometimes spread with butter. Young leaves can be made into a tea.Anise Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum) - Both flowers and leaves have a delicate anise or licorice flavor. Some people say the flavor reminds them of root beer. The blossoms make attractive plate garnishes and are often used in Chinese-style dishes. Excellent in salads.Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) - Sweet, floral flavor, with lemon and citrus notes.
Flowers look beautiful and taste good too in a glass of champagne, with chocolate cake, or as a garnish for sorbets or ice creams. Lavender lends itself to savory dishes also, from hearty stews to wine-reduced sauces. Diminutive blooms add a mysterious scent to custards, flans or sorbets. NOTE: Do not consume lavender oil unless you absolutely know that it has not be sprayed and is culinary safe.

Amaryllis

Amaryllis is a bulbous plant, with each bulb being 5–10 cm in diameter. It has several strap-shaped, green leaves, 30–50 cm long and 2–3 cm broad, arranged in two rows. The leaves are produced in the autumn or early spring in warm climates depending on the onset of rain and eventually die down by late spring. The bulb is then dormant until late summer. The plant is not frost-tolerant, nor does it do well in tropical environments since they require a dry resting period between leaf growth and flower spike production.
From the dry ground in late summer (August in zone 7) each bulb produces one or two leafless stems 30–60 cm tall, each of which bears a cluster of 2 to 12 funnel-shaped flowers at their tops. Each flower is 6–10 cm diameter with six tepals (three outer sepals, three inner petals, with similar appearance to each other). The usual color is white with crimson veins, but pink or purple also occur naturally. The common name "naked lady" stems from the plant's pattern of flowering when the foliage has died down.
The species was introduced into cultivation at the beginning of the eighteenth century. They reproduce slowly either by bulb division or seeds and have gradually naturalized from plantings in urban and suburban areas throughout the lower elevations and coastal areas in much of the West Coast of the USA since these environments mimic their native South African habitat.
Many bulbs sold as Amaryllis and described as 'ready to bloom for the holidays' actually belong to the allied genus Hippeastrum, despite being labeled as 'Amaryllis' by sellers and nurseries. Adding to the name confusion, some bulbs of other species with a similar growth and flowering pattern are also sometimes called this plant's common name "naked ladies". Some of those species have their own more widely used and accepted common names, such as the Resurrection Lily (Lycoris squamigera).
There is an "Amaryllis Belladonna Hybrid" which was bred in the 1800s in Australia. No one knows the exact species it was crossed with to produce interesting color variations of white, cream, peach, magenta and nearly red hues. The hybrids were crossed back onto the original amaryllis belladonnas and with each other to produce naturally seed bearing crosses that come in a very wide range of flower sizes, shapes, stem heights and intensities of pink. Pure white varieties with bright green stems were bred as well. The hybrids are quite distinct in that the many shades of pink also have stripes, veining, darkened edges, white centers and light yellow centers also setting them apart from the original light pink. In addition, the hybrids often produce flowers in a fuller circle rather than a "side facing" habit like the "old fashioned" pink. The hybrids are able to adapt to year round watering and fertilization but can also tolerate completely dry summer conditions if need be.

Flower care instructions

When your bouquet arrives, some blooms may be a little tired from the journey. This is completely normal, simply follow these care instructions and your bouquet will perk up soon. For quick recovery, cut stems, add flower food and stand in deep water for a few hours prior to arranging in a vase.
Choose a clean vase and use fresh lukewarm water. Avoid metal containers as they neutralise the effects of flower food.
Add all of the flower food provided, following the guidelines on the sachet.
Carefully remove the packaging from the base of the flowers.
Strip off all leaves that fall below the water line, as these will decompose and contaminate the water.
Cut 2 - 3cm off all stems using a clean sharp knife or scissors. Cut at a sharp angle so the stem can absorb water more effectively and place immediately in water. Avoid cutting through nodes on the flower stems.
Display the flowers in a cool, light location away from draughts, direct sunlight, radiators and fresh fruit.
Remember to top up the vase water daily and remove faded flowers as they occur.
To refresh your flowers re-cut the stems every 2 – 3 days, and replace in fresh lukewarm water.
Note: Bouquet contents may be a skin irritant and harmful if eaten. Your bouquet/plant should not be placed directly on to furniture or polished surfaces as scratching or staining may occur, we advise you use a protective mat.

Pink Puya

The Pink Puya has a grass-like appearance, forming a rosette of slender, arching 3-foot leaves. The plant sends out a large 3-foot flower stalk that arches outward for easy viewing. About 2 feet of the stalk is covered with flowers, each about an inch long. The petals of this variety can range in color from turquoise-green to violet, with bright orange anthers and pollen. This is an "extra pink" form of the species, from the Salta province of Argentina. The bracts start out a gorgeous flamingo-pink and slowly mature to a glowing lobster-red! Most Puyas bloom only in spring, but this form can bloom any time from spring through late fall.Full of color! The Pink Puya (Puya dyckioides) is a beautiful, rare Pineapple relative from Argentina that you probably haven't seen before. Not only do the flowers have a gorgeous color combination, but the colors deepen as the cluster matures! This exotic Bromeliad is hardy down to 20-22°F (-6°C). Despite being difficult to find, the Pink Puya is a very easy plant to grow.Puyas are terrestrial Bromeliads that are easy to raise. They grow in ordinary cactus soil, unlike the tree-dwelling Bromeliads. They enjoy sun, but will appreciate some afternoon shade in warmer areas.
They should be able to handle temperatures in the low 90s (33°C) without a problem, but extremely hot or dry conditions might stress them. Protect young plants from frost the first couple of years. They grow well in pots and can be moved indoors over the winter.Over the years, the plant forms a large colony of offshoots up to 6 feet across. You may remove the offshoots if you wish and grow them in pots. A common complaint of Puya species are the large, sharp thorns on the leaves, however this one has tiny, barely-noticeable thorns, so it is much more "user friendly" in the garden! Be patient with the Pink Puya, as it will reach flowering size at 6-7 years old. You'll be rewarded for your patience with dazzling, large flower clusters from this choice Bromeliad.

Erythrina

Erythrina
Erythrina  is a genus of flowering plants in the pea family, Fabaceae. It contains about 130 species, which are distributed in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. They are trees, growing up to 30 m (98 ft) in height. The generic name is derived from the Greek word ερυθρóς (erythros), meaning "red," referring to the flower color of certain species.Particularly in horticulture, the name coral tree is used as a collective term for these plants. "Flame trees" is another vernacular name, but may refer to a number of unrelated plants as well.
Many species of Erythrina have bright red flowers, and this may be the origin of the common name. However, the growth of the branches can resemble the shape of sea coral rather than the color of Corallium rubrumspecifically, and this is an alternative source for the name. Other popular names, usually local and particular to distinct species, liken the flowers' red hues to those of a male chicken's wattles, and/or the flower shape to its leg spurs. Commonly seen Spanish names for any local species are bucaré, frejolillo or porotillo, and in Afrikaans some are called kaffirboom. Mullumurikku is a widespread name inKerala.

Heliconia

Heliconia, derived from the Greek word helikonios, is a genus of about 100 to 200 species of flowering plants native to the tropicalAmericas and the Pacific Ocean islands west to Indonesia. Common names for the genus include lobster-claws, wild plantains or false bird-of-paradise. The last term refers to their close similarity to the bird-of-paradise flowers (Strelitzia). Collectively, these plants are also simply referred to as heliconias. It is the sole genus of the family Heliconiaceae, but was formerly included in the family Musaceae. The APG system of 1998, and its successor, the APG II system of 2003, confirms the Heliconiaceae as distinct and places them in the order Zingiberales, in the commelinidclade of monocots. The leaves of these plants are 15-300 cm (6 in-10 ft) long, oblong, growing opposite one another on non-woody petioles often longer than the leaf, often forming large clumps with age. Their flowers are produced on long, erect or drooping panicles, and consist of brightly colored waxy bracts, with small true flowers peeping out from the bracts. The growth habit of heliconias is similar to Canna, Strelitzia, and bananas, to which they are related.

Flowers in people’s lives

Since ancient times, flowers in people’s lives play a huge role. They have always been associated with love, joy, cheerfulness and good humor. Our forefathers gave flowers not only on holidays, but also the simple days because he believed that the magic of flowers can lift a person on the diseased feet, inspired by the lightness of life. Flower in ancient time, after a man born, pick, dried, and always carry it with, they were like a guardian angel, the safety of the plagues, disasters, and energy vampirism.Nature has created a lot of different flowers.
Each of the two hundred thousand species of these beautiful plants on our planet has its own unique, beautiful and unusual, all raise a lot of joyful emotions and feelings. Flowers not only make our lives a lot of light, but they clean the air around us, fills it with oxygen, light and delicate flavor. Scientists have long been proven that this beautiful piece of nature can absorb negative energy, give us a positively charged particle. Many scientific experiments confirmed that the vegetation has energy and have an impact of external effects – pain, death, affection. Each Flower is caused by a variety of feelings you only need to be specific in its unique charm and character. Every Flower in addition to it’s specific aroma, beauty and aesthetic effect itself has some kind of hidden symbolism, the inner mind, which sometimes can even explain it-like character traits of people.

Meanings of Rose Colors

Red Roses: A red rose is an unmistakable expression of love.Red Roses convey deep emotions - be it love, longing or desire. Red Roses can also be used to convey respect, admiration or devotion. A deep red rose can be used to convey heartfelt regret and sorrow. The number of red roses has special romantic meanings associated with them. 12 red roses is the most popular of all which conveys "Be mine" and "I love you"
White Roses: White is the color of purity, chastity and innocence. White flowers are generally associated with new beginnings and make an ideal accompaniment to a first-time bride walking down the isle. White flowers can be used to convey sympathy or humility. They also are indicative of spirituality. Hence, White roses also follow suit.
Yellow Roses: Yellow roses are an expression of exuberance. Yellow roses evoke sunny feelings of joy, warmth and welcome. They are symbols of friendship and caring. The yellow rose, like the other roses, does not carry an undertone of romance. It indicates purely platonic emotions.
Pink Roses: There are a lot of variations of the pink rose. Over all, pink roses are used to convey gentle emotions such as admiration, joy and gratitude. Light pink rose blooms are indicative of sweetness and innocence. Deep pink rose blooms convey deep gratitude and appreciation. Pink roses also connote elegance and grace.
Orange Roses: While a yellow rose reminds us of the sun, an orange rose reminds us of a fiery blaze. These fiery bloomssignify passion and energy. Orange roses can be used to express intense desire, pride and fervor. They also convey a sense of fascination. These flowers rival only the red roses as messengers of passion in romance.
Lavender Roses: A Lavender rose like its color conveys enchantment. It also expresses "love at first sight" . Darker shades of lavender roses (close to purple) convey a sense of regal majesty and splendor. These roses are used to express fascination and adoration.
Blue Roses: A perfectly blue rose is still elusive like the perfectly black rose. Blue roses cannot be achieved naturally so they represent the unattainable or the mysterious. Blue roses therefore embody the desire for the unattainable. They say "I can't have you but I can't stop thinking about you"
Green roses: Green is the color of harmony, of opulence, of fertility. It is also a color indicative of peace and tranquility. Green roses (these are off-white roses with shades of green) can symbolize best wishes for a prosperous new life or wishes for recovery of good health
Black Roses: Black is the color of death and farewell. A black rose, like the blue rose remains elusive. What we know as black roses are actually really dark red roses. Black roses convey the death of a feeling or idea. Sending black roses to someone indicates the death of the relationship.
Mixed Roses: By mixing rose blooms of different colors purposefully, you can create a bouquet of emotions. For example, a bouquet of red and white roses would mean I love you intensely and my intentions are honourable. A random mix of roses would convey mixed feelings or send a message: "I don't know what my feelings are yet but I sure do like you enough to send you roses."

Fresh Cut Flowers Delivered for Christmas

Readers of this blog know I am ambivalent about buying cut flowers. On the one hand, you’re paying money for something that won’t last. On the other hand, they are psychologically beneficial and can last pretty long for what you pay for them. So, when I was contacted over a week ago by someone from Sunflowerguy.com, asking if I’d like to review their bouquets, I thought, why not? It is getting dreary around here and I could use a pick me up.
We are a flower grower in Southern California and also ship fresh cut flower bouquets directly to consumers through our website. We are actually the largest grower of ornamental sunflowers in the world and have developed an innovative packaging that allows our bouquets to be shipped without drying out or being compressed. You might say it’s a fresher way to send flowers.

They do offer sunflowers at this time of the year, but I chose the “Simply Stylish” arrangement. The fresh flowers were delivered on Friday, December 10th. They came in a box:
I could give a fair review. I tried to imagine what it would be like if an elderly person received these flowers. The card that came with the flowers said to remove the green foam and rinse the stems. I wondered if I was supposed to put the stems back into the green foam. The instructions didn’t say, but I asked my contact and he said the green foam could be thrown away. I was relieved to hear that, as it crumbled in my hands.
Then the card said to cut stems about one inch from the bottom. The stems were quite thick; I finally gave up on kitchen scissors and dug my pruners out of my garden bag. I don’t know how an elderly person or anyone without weak hands would manage it. My contact said it wasn’t absolutely necessary to cut the stems, but I know from my own past experience it does help make the flowers last longer.
The final instructions were to add the provided flower food and water to the vase and put the flowers back in. No mention was made of the rubber band, so I asked my contact about that. He said the rubber band, like the green foam, was only to help keep the flowers together in transit. I guess a lot of people wouldn’t worry about any of that, and just do whatever seemed best to them, but I wanted to give these flowers a fair chance. They say that every bouquet is guaranteed for eight days, and I wanted to see if they indeed lasted that long.
You can see how the edges of the rose petals have darkened. I think this was cold damageI think this was damage from the cold. My husband says he noticed it the first day, but I didn’t notice it until later. I have no idea where the flowers were in the twelve hours before they were delivered, but I do know it got down to 0F around here. Of course, no one can guarantee the weather, but if your winter temperatures tend to be more reasonable, your flowers will likely arrive undamaged.
This is what the arrangement looked like eight days laterI am not a real picky person; at this point I would say it wouldn’t be suitable for a fancy dinner party but is good enough for “every day.” Perhaps if I had paid my own hard cash for it I would feel differently, I don’t know.
If you go to Sunflowerguy.com you will see there are many different arrangements to choose from. Some have sunflowers in them, and some do not. Many are very much in the holiday spirit. Right now you can get $5 off any bouquet if you use the coupon code winter2010 when you check out. And they have an ongoing contest where you can get flower delivery for an entire year.

Shine a little LED on the subject of Stink Bugs

If you think you’re safe, beware. Researchers predict that if one out of 10 homes had stink bugs last year, nine in 10 homes could have them this season. According to Dr. Tracy Leskey, a research entomologist with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, adult stink bugs are moving inside and looking for places to spend the winter.

"Now is the time to fight stink bugs," says Rod Schneidmiller, president of Sterling International, developer of the RESCUE! Stink Bug Traps. "Whether you use a homemade trap or one of ours, do something this fall to break the cycle and reduce their numbers."

By Halloween, most stink bugs will have moved inside to hibernate. Experts say a good indoor stink bug trap with an LED light works best to attract stink bugs indoors.

To prevent stink bugs from taking over your home this winter, follow these tips from the pros:

* Seal up your castle. The first line of defense is to close your windows and doors, and seal up any openings where the bugs can enter. They can flatten out and slip through the cracks to hide in your house for winter.

* Create a barrier outdoors. Outdoors stink bugs are attracted to scent. Indoors they move to light. Place traps on porches, posts and trees around your home. New traps on the market catch both young and adult stink bugs with a pheromone attractant that lures them from up to 30 feet away.

* Check traps frequently. Make certain your traps are catching stink bugs. If not, move them to another spot. "Be vigilant," says Doug Oster, author of Grow Organic. "You have to out-smart them."

* Pick them off. When you see them on your plants, deck or curtains, pick them off with a tissue, drop in a cup of soapy water and flush down the toilet. Do not release outside. "These aren’t lady bugs," says Oster. "A dead stink bug is the only good stink bug."

* Seek and destroy them indoors. Once they migrate indoors, the bugs congregate in warm dark areas. Indoors they are attracted to light, not scent, so place your traps in attics, living areas and basements where the bugs gather to hibernate through the winter. "Light is what works indoors," Oster says. RESCUE! just introduced a new Stink Bug Light - an attachable LED proven to lure the bugs into the trap. The light easily snaps onto the Stink Bug Trap and plugs into either a wall outlet or battery pack.

* Don’t vacuum. If you vacuum, you’ll scare them and they will emit a foul odor that will linger in your vacuum cleaner and home. If you do, change and dispose the bag immediately.

wedding flowers whether indoor or outdoor

Your wedding is one of the most very important occasions in your life. Whatever the scale and type of the wedding, well chosen flowers can transform the location of the event, whether indoor or outdoor, and make it into a special occasion for you. Your wedding bouquet should compliment your wedding dress. Set yourself a budget and stick to it. Any florist who’s worth their weight should be able to work within your budget.

You can have the wedding of your dreams and you can have it at any location imaginable – when you carefully plan and select your wedding flowers and lighting.
The charm and fragrance of flowers in combination with the usage of natural light, candle light and lighting fixtures sets or enhances your wedding theme. If you’ve always planned to be married in a romantic paradise, set the scene with soft lighting and warm or pastel shades of pink, lilac, creamy white, gold-tones in the lights, flowers, and ribbons.
Flowers have always been part of the love and romance of weddings, right back to European’s brides and grooms, who wore garlands of flowers to symbolize new life and fertility. Later brides wore light orange blossoms in their hair to represent purity and fruitfulness.
Flowers set the mood and tone for your entire wedding and choosing them has never been easier. That’s because the newest trends in wedding flowers are not about matchmaking – the bridal bouquet, boutonnieres, corsages and centerpieces no longer have to be identical. The latest floral styles are all about color, boldness and individual design. Wedding flowers usually follow fashion trends and right now individuality is in, while conventionality is out. This means that the bridesmaids’ bouquets do not have to match the bride’s and each bridesmaid can potentially have a unique bouquet. Colorful blossoms, as opposed to conventional white, are also in style especially plums and lavenders. This makes it easy for brides making their own centerpieces because anything goes. Be creative! Create a different floral assortment for each table.
Beautiful wedding flowers will enhance your special day and will remain in your memories and pictures forever. Your wedding day will be one of the most important days of your life.

Plant grafted Roses The Easy Way

Last October, when grafted roses planted, he explained that the graft must be four inches below ground level. He noted how, with roots extending a foot or more above the bud union, finished digging holes deep enough.

Never again! Yesterday I heard Ginenthal Lee, who owns Der Rosenmeister nursery in Ithaca, to remember the basics. You may remember from a visit to Rosenmeister Der Lee has specialized in cold-hardy roses. He accepted that it must plant the seed of the seven 53 inches below ground level, but stressed that there is no need to plant the roots down.

Not down, but Sideways

Instead, you can plant shrubs at an angle with the graft to the proper fishing depth and the roots down, but more horizontal than vertical. (Those of you who are planting tomato seedlings in a corner so that the trunk is buried up to the first set of leaves immediately know what I mean.) This means that you dig a large hole, instead of a very deep hole, which most people find it easier to do. It can also mean moving temporarily to other plants and replant them in the course of the buried roots is increased if your beds, which are crowded as mine.

Buy a shrub unbalanced

If you use this method of planting grafted roses, and when you go shopping for his part, does not want the branches of a bush evenly on all sides. You want a balance of those in which all the growth seems to be growing in one direction. When planting the rose in hand, you can enjoy this lame positioning for growth, so all points up. Another advantage of the plantation is the side that more roots in the layer will be the most fertile and spacious. Lee also said that eventually increased the grafted root grafting and the pattern is going to die, which gives, in essence, an own root rose after three to four years.

Read Lee Der Rosenmeister Blog

I learned much of his speech, and you can learn from him, too. Lee started blogging and his posts are very informative. He said he has a completely redesigned Web site in the pipeline, so stay tuned!

This is no Ordinary Snowdrops

And look at the snow, and then there are snowdrops. I am for the most part, satisfied with the Galanthus nivalis (pictured below), I had many years ago, which said a lot in my division, and their efforts to spread on their own. Other differences are obsessed with stems of flowers, Spat, petals and internal and external. We call them galanthophiles. Hitch Lyman, owner of the nursery Temple, is one of the most galanthophiles in the United States.

He has more than 400,100 varieties of snowdrops growing in his garden, which is open to the public on Saturday, 2 April 10 at 16:00, in the framework Garden Conservancy Open Day ($ 5 entry fee). I'm going to be there, and I hope you can join me.

Updated Conservation Garden: The Garden of host Hitch Lyman in Trumansburg, New York has asked us to send a special message in the snow expected to be covering his garden on Saturday. The garden is open to visitors, but if you find that you can not do this, visitors are welcome to come on Saturday, April 9, as in other places, at the same time, 10:00 to 16:00 Visit our website for more details about the open house.

Scared Lotus Flower and Bud

 Lotus

Nelumbo Cultivar

(Nee-LUM-bo)

This cherry red lotus flower was spotted earlier this summer. I liked being able to sprout and bloom. Shot 80-200mm / 2.8 lens. The lens is very good, even if it was bought "used". I actually came in good condition, and shows that the old and new lenses for digital cameras do not mix well.

From what I can say from 80 to 200 were produced in the early 1990s. It is equipped with an old Nikon Zoom push-pull, which is a bit strange, since I really used to the system to modern two rings on the lenses other than I have. It's really a minor thing and easy to use once you get the hang of it. One thing about the lens, there is little difficulty in dealing with its physical size. It is big and heavy, but the hand holding it for a good shot is not bad, but I do not want to do all day. People often have a double take when you're in public, and it is against my policy to photograph incognito.

The Forester

The Forester gloves are gorgeous, but much warmer, so I really haven’t worn them much. The elastic gusset across the knuckles gives them a lot more flexibility than similar leather gloves. They are so good-looking that I am tempted to take them out of my gardening tote and stick them in the car to be my winter driving gloves. They are definitely more flexible than my current driving gloves, which are made from polar fleece with leather palms.

Fields and Lane is new to gardening but not to gloves. It is an offshoot of Laughlin Cartrell, which makes gloves and other accessories for the lumber industry. I asked Nadia why they started making gardening gloves. “Although there are quite a few gardening gloves out there a small number of them have the quality and durability that this market deserves.” Did you hear that? Nadia thinks gardeners deserve quality and durability.

Coneflower

This marks the third time ‘Harvest Moon’ Coneflower has made it onto this blog. This little patch had a lighter color scheme then most ‘Harvest Moon’ and I have to confess I have been enjoying some muted colors in the garden’s palette. Don’t get me wrong I still love bold colors but have become fonder of the subtle color displays too and might even start designing with that in mind.
You can see a Bumble Bee was about the flowers and I was pleased to see some Honeybees around too. There seems to be more and more Yellow Jackets and fewer Honeybees then ever.

It was wildlife week at the Estate or so it seemed. Upon arriving for work on Monday a group of several Coyotes were in the woods raising a heck of a racket. We couldn’t see them but the calls were a little nerve wracking. It reminded me not to bring my dogs to work. They would have been running to see the source of the noise.
We also had a Red Tailed Hawk swoop in and grab a Chipmunk. The Chipmunks have had a population explosion and it was nice to see a predator take one. It all happened in a blur and took a couple of seconds to actually figure out what happened.
Yesterday I decided to prune the male Winterberry Holly because it was hiding one of the females that has a good berry crop this year. Right next to me was a super big Butterfly Bush at eye level. I am not sure what happened but the Butterfly Bushes got bigger than ever this year. Most of them are grown from seedlings and that maybe the reason some got to 20 feet tall. While chopping the head of the Holly a Hummingbird flew in to feed on the Butterfly Bush. It was about 2 feet in front of face and I marveled at its flying and feeding techniques. It was visiting every flower on the stalk (which is hundreds of them) with such precision. The bird never seemed to notice me and flew off after a few minutes. It looked to be on some sort of route.
To top it off we have a large Orb type spider leaving in the front of the shed. Bugs don’t usually bother me (I have seen my share) but this guy gives me the creeps. He is quite industrious completely rebuilding his complicated web several times already. I did notice quite a few flies and mosquitoes in his web so it’s beneficial insect for now.

British flowers are the source

Researchers are poised to start clinical trials with a new "smart bomb" treatment, derived from the flower, targeted specifically at tumours.
The treatment, called colchicine, was able to slow the growth of and even completely "kill" a range of different cancers, in experiments with mice.
The research was highlighted at the British Science Festival in Bradford.
The team behind it, from the Institute for Cancer Therapeutics (ICT) at the University of Bradford, has published the work in the journal Cancer Research.
The native British Autumn crocus, otherwise known as "meadow saffron" or "naked lady", is recorded in early herbal guides as a treatment for inflammation.
This is because it contains the potent chemical colchicine, which is known to have medicinal properties, including anti-cancer effects.
But colchicine is toxic to other tissues in the body, as well as cancer, so until now its use has been limited.

The researchers at ICT have now altered the colchicine molecule so it is inactive in the body until it reaches the tumour.
Once there, the chemical becomes active and breaks up the blood vessels supplying the tumour, effectively starving it.
This effect is made possible because of enzymes that all tumours produce, whose usual function is to break down the normal cells nearby, allowing the tumour to spread.
The modified colchicine molecule has a protein attached to it that makes it harmless. But the tumour enzyme specifically targets the protein and removes it.
The colchicine is then activated, and the process of breaking down blood vessels and starving the cancerous cells begins.
Optimistic but cautious
One of the things that may make this drug so effective, Professor Patterson said, is that it will be "only active in the tumour, and not cause damage to normal tissue".
Because the enzyme necessary to activate the toxic colchicine is produced only by solid tumours, it may be possible to treat cancers effectively with virtually no side effects to the rest of the body.
The "smart bombs" do not begin to act until they reach tumour tissue
Moreover, as the drug will be activated wherever the enzyme is produced, the delivery mechanism should allow treatment of particularly problematic cases of metastasis, where the cancer spreads from its initial site.
Pre-clinical tests in mice have shown startlingly successful results.
"What we're looking for is a delay in the growth of the tumour," said Professor Patterson.
"But sometimes the treatment is so effective that in half of the studies, the mice appeared to be cured of their cancer. All mice responded to the treatment."
Just one dose of the colchicine produced this remarkable effect. But if it passes clinical tests, the researchers believe it will be used alongside existing cancer treatments, as part of the complex process of tackling the disease.
The researchers hope that the treatment will enter the initial stage of clinical testing at St James's Hospital in Leeds within the next 18 months.
Professor Patterson said that he was "very optimistic about the opportunities of the treatment, but still cautious because everything done to date has been in the laboratory".
Paul Workman, head of cancer therapeutics at the Institute of Cancer Research, called the work an "interesting new approach".
"The project is still at quite an early stage but the results so far look promising in the laboratory models that have been studied," he said.
"If confirmed in more extensive laboratory studies, drugs based on this approach could be very useful as part of combination treatments for various cancers."

You want her be luck, then make you love see by her , give her some flowers for make her happy.
Use dreaming consciously as meditation and know well that conscious dreaming opens new doors of perception. Lie down, relax; and dream but do not fall asleep; remain conscious in the background; wait and watch; dream anything that happens to your mind: do not plan beforehand; dream anything because in dream the whole world is yours; dream your existence as you please; dream and be content, content with your dreams because they are yours, and remember that nothing can be yours like your dreams because you yourself are a dream entity! — and also because your wishes come to be true in your dreams, and only in your dreams. But do not fall into identification. Be a witness. Remain aware. And then suddenly there will be no dreaming. Only you and illumination.

Man is not the end but only the means Man is not really a being but only a tension between two planes of being. Man is a bridge only, that is why man cannot remain satisfied with himself. His heart is nothing but a continent of discontent and his very being is anguish. Religion is the wish to pass beyond himself as he now is. That is why I say man can never be irreligious; that is impossible; he can pretend to be but he cannot be. Religion is not something accidental or circumstantial, it is in the very nature of man. Man is a religious animal and man is nothing if man is not a desire to transcend himself. He can go below himself, or he can go above but he cannot remain himself. He cannot be rest. That is why there is restlessness
Goethe is said to have cried when dying: Light, light, more light! And Miguel Unamuno has responded with his: No — warmth, warmth, more warmth! For we die of cold and not of darkness! But I say to you that we die neither because of cold nor because of darkness but because of our lust for living or because of our fear of death — which is to say the same thing in different terms. Do not look at death as opposite to life, because it is not. And live death moment to moment, do not postpone it for the end because that creates fear. Die each moment to the past, and then each moment you will be fresh, young and reborn. And then there is light always because the very darkness becomes light, and warmth also, because only the dead past is cold. THE PRESENT IS ALWAYS WARM.
